University of Lynchburg Sets Fundraising Record on 10th Annual GiveDay
LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Lynchburg celebrated its most successful fundraising event in history during the 10th annual GiveDay on April 17, collecting $725,000 from 3,218 alumni donors in just 24 hours.
According to data from the University Advancement Office and the university’s annual financial reports, alumni contributions have surpassed $6.4 million over the past decade. Giving has increased steadily each year, averaging 6.2% annual growth.
“GiveDay is about more than dollars — it’s about pride,” said Dana Jefferson, director of alumni relations. “These gifts help fund scholarships, new technology and campus improvements that shape students’ daily lives.”
The average gift size more than doubled from $94 in 2015 to $226 in 2025, reflecting stronger alumni engagement and increased financial capacity. The Class of 2019 led this year’s participation, raising more than $48,000 and achieving a 22% participation rate — twice the alumni average.
The rise in giving has coincided with key milestones, including a spike during the university’s centennial celebration in 2023. Officials credit the success to long-term efforts in cultivating alumni loyalty and data-driven engagement strategies.
Alumni from the past 15 years made up 62% of total contributions, according to donation records by class decade. University officials said the 2025 funds will be allocated as follows: 40% to scholarships, 30% to academic initiatives, 20% to athletics and 10% to student life programs.
GiveDay has evolved from a simple tradition to a meaningful movement,” Jefferson said. Looking ahead, the university plans to expand its online giving platforms and introduce gamified class challenges to further boost participation. “We’re investing in future Hornets,” said Jason Lee, a 1998 graduate and member of the Alumni Council.
